Gmail E-mail Service Guide

Gmail is probably the best email service out there. Did you know that Gmail was voted #2 in PC World's Top 100 products of 2005, right after Firefox? Why wouldn't you want to switch? Well, because it can be a pain to switch to a new email address. I know.

Also, Gmail has more space for mail then: MSN, AOL, Yahoo, or Hotmail. It has over 5,000 Megabytes of email storage. That's more than 5 Gigabytes!!!  Gmail also organizes its space pretty well. as far as storage, It has:

Inbox
Starred
Chats
Sent Mail
Drafts
All Mail
Spam
Trash

Contacts

If you are familiar with folders (I am not  quite sure if Comcast has folders or not), Gmail's got something better. They are called "Labels". To "mark" a message as "Bravenet" for example, all you would have to do is receive the email from Bravenet, the mark "Bravenet" as your label in "Other options", and put it in Archive. Then whenever you view it, you will see the labeled "Bravenet" even if it's in your inbox, which saves a lot of trouble.

As far as accounts go, it's very easy and super fun. First you put in your first and last name (or an artificial last name as I have)...then the real fun starts.

If you would like, you may add a picture to go next to your name so any Gmail user can view it. It could be a picture of you, of something you like or someone you like. Also, you can set up your own signature that will go with your picture. This will be at the end of every email you start. For Example mine is:

--
David Mume
E-mail: StealthLinksContact@gmail.com
Website: www.stealthlinks.bravehost.com

It goes on the bottom of every email I start.

Checking spelling is really the best. All you have to do is click "Check spelling" and then it highlights in yellow what words are wrong and to change them just click on them and suggestions will come up. No changing of screens, not out of the way, simple and easy. It's a simple addition, but it goes a long way!

Like signatures, you can also set vacation settings. That means that if someone tries to send you an email while you are on vacation and can't reach them immediately, an automatic reply goes right to them telling you that you are on vacation and are currently unavailable. You can custom that message if you want! Just go to settings, vacation settings, and change the text to what you would like to say. Maybe "Sorry, I'm on vacation right now..."ect. or "Sorry we are having a power shortage..."ect. or "Sorry, I'm not here right now because I've been banned from the computer on a strict punishment..."ect. and....yes I've had to use something like that before..heh...anyways... let's move on....

Replies...well, it's MUCH Better than Hotmail or Yahoo in the sense that it takes up less space. Upon a reply to an email (example: "Re: Hi") it doesn't take up another slot in the inbox like Hotmail and Yahoo. When you reply to that, it takes that ONE slot, instead of leaving replies all over the place, it keeps it on the same email. The including replies, all emails that appear in the inbox are shown by the people that sent them, the number of replies, the subject, and the date of which the email was sent. For example:

  James, me (26) »
Re: Hello!   Mar 16

The box (before the name "James") is for check marking to mark labels, email you want to select for a number of things. Mark as spam, ect. Like all the others, basically.

Want to finish an email, but just don't have the time? Save it as a Draft! You can access it whenever you want after that! Also, if you close unexpectedly from the browser, it auto-saves it! So not all your work is put to waste! Beat that, Hotmail!

Want to see an attachment folder quickly? Gmail checks for viruses WHILE you are checking the email! It saves a lot of time, and rather than switching screens, it scans for you whenever!

One of the HUGEST things about Gmail is the live chat. I would say it's their #1 feature. On Gmail, you have a side bar that says "Contacts". If they are Gmail users, and have agreed to be Friends with you (a simple invitation will do that for you), you can see if they are online or not! If the dot next to them is a gray X, then that means there are not online. If there is a green circle that means they are on line. Many different symbols mean different things. You can put in a custom text message that will be next to your picture/name (one while you are online could be: "I am currently online!" or with the busy symbol provided from Gmail: "I'm currently replying to emails now, so I'll get back to you soon" or you can make yourself offline all together while you are on, if you wish). It's easy to use! And the best part...when they are online you can live chat with them! It's really great! A mini-window pops up in the corner as the chat box. Just type in a message, hit ENTER, and the message is sent. It is a very easy way to get information out to each other or just to have fun and chat (Like if you were on the Phone or something).

Please consider Gmail. It is in my opinion the best possible service (and if you didn't know it's from Google). Again, I have not looked at Comcast but compared to: MSN, AOL, Yahoo, and Hotmail...let's just say Gmail is the chocolate doughnut out of all the other plain ones.
